One question runs through the whole guide: where is the Church that Jesus Christ said He would build? The answer it gives is not that the Bible matters less than people think. It is that the Bible has always belonged inside a living community — the one that received it, preserved it, copied it, read it aloud, preached it and decided which books were in it.

It works through Matthew 16:18 and lays out the three possibilities honestly: either the Church Christ founded failed, or it went invisible for centuries and was restored later, or it is still here and can be identified. Then it walks the first three centuries, when Christians were baptizing, celebrating the Eucharist and dying for the faith with no New Testament in their hands, because the canon had not been settled yet. It closes on Marcion — the man whose private canon forced the Church to state which books were Scripture — and on what that implies about who has the authority to say so.

A study about what happens to Christianity when it is read in a language the apostles did not write in. Greek is built for participation, mystery and encounter; English, shaped by the Reformation and the Enlightenment, pulls toward definition and analysis. The claim is that the difference is structural, not accidental.

Seven words carry the argument: ekklesia, metanoia, theosis, paradosis, logos, hades and pisteuo — each one shown in what it meant to a first-century Greek speaker and what the English word quietly does to it. The second half is the harder question: the Septuagint was the Old Testament the apostles quoted, and this guide traces how the Western canon came to be measured against a different text instead, and what was set aside when it did. It ends on Mary Magdalene, and what the Church has always called her.

The longest study here, and the most historical. Nine sessions across the seven councils of the undivided Church, from Nicaea in 325 to Nicaea in 787, told as what they actually were: seven crises, seven fights, seven decisions the whole Church then received.

Each session names the people involved and then opens the Scriptures the fight was over — the verses the heretics pressed, the verses the Fathers answered with, and the reasoning by which the Church came to its answer. Arius and Proverbs 8:22. The Spirit-fighters and the grammar of baptism. Nestorius, Cyril, and Elizabeth calling Mary the mother of my Lord. Eutyches and the Christ who sleeps in the storm. The Three Chapters. Maximus, who lost his tongue and his right hand rather than sign. Iconoclasm and the Word made visible.

It begins where the Church's own conciliar language begins, in Acts 15, with the sentence that gives the study its title, and it ends with a synaxarion — the day in the year on which each of these people is remembered.

This one is pastoral rather than argumentative. It is for the person who has already been persuaded and now has to count the cost: leaving a church that formed them, and telling people who love them what they are doing.

Six sessions, each built on a person who made the same crossing. Abraham, called out of everything familiar with no map. Ruth, who is not asked to despise where she came from. Simeon's prophecy of the sword, for when following Christ strains a household — read with St. Elizabeth the New Martyr, who waited years and let no one rush her. Ephesians on the household of God, and the Western saints who belonged to the undivided Church. Christ and the children, for anyone whose ministry travels with them. And epektasis, the never-finished stretching forward, for the long road of the catechumenate.

It does not pretend the road is painless. It says plainly that leaving a church home is a real grief, and then it puts that grief where the saints put theirs. It closes with a small iconostasis — every icon in the study, named and explained.

The Orthodox doctrine of salvation, set out at length, because it cannot be reduced to a single verse or a single moment — Scripture speaks of it in three tenses at once. We were saved, we are being saved, we will be saved.

Written for someone who comes to icons with a Bible in hand asking where is this written — which is the right question, and gets a real answer.

It begins in Genesis 1 with the image of God, and with the cherubim God Himself commanded to be carved over the mercy seat in Exodus 25 — in the same book that forbids graven images. It reads Exodus 20 as a single sentence rather than half of one, distinguishes eidolon from eikon, and then makes the argument that decides the question: the Incarnation. The invisible God took a face. What was once impossible to depict became depictable, and refusing to depict it says something about the Incarnation, not just about art.

Then the history — iconoclasm, the council of Hieria, and the Seventh Ecumenical Council of 787 — and the distinction that council drew between latreia, which belongs to God alone, and proskynesis, the honour shown to holy things. The last third is a close reading of five icons: the Anastasis, the Pantocrator, Christ the Great High Priest, the Crucifixion, and St. Constantine — what every element in each of them is saying.

The strangest book in the Old Testament, and what the Church has always done with it. The Song of Songs is a love poem, unembarrassed, and the Church put it at the heart of her Scriptures, sang it over her martyrs and monastics, wove it into the hymns of the Theotokos and read it aloud in the darkest services of Holy Week.

Six sessions on divine eros and the Bridegroom Christ: why a council condemned a bishop for reading the Song flatly; the Nymphios of Holy Week and the midnight of the heart; the wound of longing, and Dionysius saying that God Himself is eros; Gregory of Nyssa on the luminous darkness, and the Bridegroom who hides in order to draw; the enclosed garden and the Theotokos; and epektasis, the ascent that never arrives because God is inexhaustible.

A study of lust, repentance and chastity that neither flinches nor moralises. Its starting claim is the Orthodox one: the passions are not the enemy. Desire is not a defect to be killed but a God-given power that has come loose from its object and has to be put back.

Eight passages: the disordering of desire in Genesis 3; David and Bathsheba, read together with Psalm 50, the Church's great psalm of repentance; Joseph, who ran; the Song of Songs, where desire is shown rightly ordered; Christ relocating the whole battle from the act to the heart in Matthew 5; the body as temple in 1 Corinthians 6 and Galatians 5; Augustine's Confessions on the years he could not break the habit and the grace that finally broke it; and Maximus the Confessor on what desire is for in the end.

Acedia is the strangest of the passions the Desert catalogued, and the one modern readers recognise fastest: a restlessness that makes the present moment, the present task and the present people all feel unbearable at once. Evagrius called it the noonday demon because it strikes when the sun stands still overhead and time seems to stop moving.

Eight passages trace the diagnosis. Israel weeping for the food of Egypt while eating bread from heaven. Elijah under the broom tree asking to die, and the angel who brings him food and sleep before a single word of correction. Jonah furious in the sun. Martha, busy about many things. Gethsemane, and could you not watch one hour. Paul telling the Thessalonians not to grow weary. Then Evagrius naming it, and Cassian and the Desert Fathers on the cure, which turns out to be staying.

It is not a study about laziness, and it does not treat the feeling as the problem.

A study for anyone grieving the end of a long love. It is not written to hurry the reader past the pain or to explain it away, but to keep company in it, and to put that company where the Church has always put it — in the Psalms, and beside the Fathers who knew this ground.

Six sessions. Out of the depths, and the permission Scripture gives to grieve out loud. Casting the whole weight of it on Christ, and learning to pray that rather than perform it. The furnace of affliction, and how suffering offered to God refines instead of only wounding. The noonday demon, because grief and despondency arrive together. Grief, the resurrection, and what the Church actually does about death. It begins where the Church begins: not with clenched silence, not with hollow cheer, but with a word she is willing to sing over an open grave.

Six sessions. Blessed are those who mourn — grieving honestly, and the comfort that is promised. I am the resurrection and the life. Memory eternal, and the Church's prayer for the departed: the Panikhida, the kollyva, the commemoration at the Liturgy that Cyril of Jerusalem explains to the newly baptized, and 2 Maccabees 12, where prayer for the dead is written down. The fifth commandment, turned toward those the departed left behind. Serving the grieving as unto Christ, without emptying yourself in the process. And the sorrow that turns to joy.
